Any weekend

Things to do every weekend

  • Walk the beach promenade. The wavy wall along A1A runs past the busiest stretch of Fort Lauderdale Beach. Mornings are cooler and parking is easier.
  • Ride the Water Taxi. An all-day pass lets you hop on and off along the canals, the New River and Las Olas. Read our Water Taxi guide or see stops and tips.
  • Hike or bike Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. A shady park between the Intracoastal and the ocean. Florida State Parks lists it as open 8 a.m. to sunset every day, $6 per car (up to 8 people) or $4 for one person.
  • Tour Bonnet House Museum & Gardens. A historic estate on the beach, open Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check its website for special closures.
  • Stroll Las Olas Boulevard and the Riverwalk. Shops, cafes and galleries downtown, with the brick Riverwalk along the New River a short walk away.

Sand and sea

Pick a beach for the weekend

Fort Lauderdale Beach is the classic choice, close to restaurants and the Sunday market. For snorkeling from shore, go to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, where reef lines sit within about 100 yards of the beach. Families like the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk for its long paved path, and Dania Beach is usually calmer. Before you swim, check the flag on the lifeguard stand. Our beach flag guide says what each color means, and the live weather page shows today's sea conditions.

Good to know

Weekend tips

  • Go to the beach early. Garages and meters near Las Olas fill up by late morning on sunny weekends.
  • During boat show week, A1A and SE 17th Street get very slow. Use the Water Taxi or rideshare if you can.
  • Summer storms often roll in during the afternoon. Plan outdoor time for the morning and keep an eye on the sky.
  • Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. If a storm is coming, follow Broward County emergency updates.
  • Wear sunscreen and drink water, even in winter. The sun is strong all year.

Common questions

What is there to do in Fort Lauderdale this weekend for free?

+

Walk Fort Lauderdale Beach and the A1A promenade, browse the Sunday market at Las Olas Oceanside Park (free to walk around), stroll the Riverwalk and Las Olas Boulevard, and on the first Sunday of the month catch the free Sunday Jazz Brunch at Esplanade Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Is there a weekend market in Fort Lauderdale?

+

Yes. The MKT at Las Olas Oceanside Park runs every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the east end of Las Olas Boulevard, with food, produce and local makers. The Las Olas Beach Garage at 200 Las Olas Circle is next door.

When is the Fort Lauderdale boat show in 2026?

+

October 28 through November 1, 2026. It spreads across six sites, including Bahia Mar Yachting Center and the Broward County Convention Center.

Where can I go snorkeling from the beach near Fort Lauderdale?

+

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, just north of the city. Three reef lines sit within about 100 yards of the beach in roughly 10 feet of water, so you can swim out from shore on calm days.

What should I do on a rainy weekend in Fort Lauderdale?

+

Head indoors to Bonnet House Museum & Gardens (open Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; some of it is outdoors), catch a show at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, or shop at Sawgrass Mills. South Florida rain often comes in short afternoon bursts, so a beach morning can still work.
